As anti-Japanese sentiment mounts in China, the Wall Street Journal reports (subscriber-only link) that Beijing is trying to put the Internet genie back in the bottle. The country’s rulers seem worried that things may be getting out of hand:

In the past, the government has seen the expression of anti-Japan sentiment as a "safe" pressure valve for a frustrated population…. It is ironic that in a carefully controlled cyberspace where discussing the death of the pope was a no-no, messages espousing hatred, violence and racism have been allowed to flourish if the Communist Party determined them to be in its own interests.
