QUOTABLE

The fact that we spoke so many languages at the time - Marxism, Nasserism, Baathism, Palestinian nationalism, as well as Arabic, English and French - didn't matter as things turned out. For, like intersecting circles, these ways of describing the world kept on meeting on the same bit of common ground. When the boundaries of the circles began to rot and crumble away, all that remained was "we are Arabs" or "we are Muslims," and "there is Israel" and "this is the Palestinian cause." That's about it, and, if one stops to think about it, it is not much. Certainly, it is not enough...Silence is not born out of fear; it is born out of the poverty of thought."

Kanan Makiya, "Cruelty & Silence"
