PROSAIC

Normblog's thoughts on bad translations remind me of Harvard historian Richard Pipes's account of the end of his youthful passion for Wagner's favourite philosopher:

I had experienced my first doubts about Nietzsche much earlier when my friend, Olek, translated "Thus Spake Zarathustra" into Yiddish - "Azoy Sugt Zarathustra" - which instantly punctured it. Yiddish deflates all pomposity.
