LADY DAY FOR TODAY?

A lot of people are waxing lyrical over the jazz singer Madeleine Peyroux. I still don't quite get it - Peyroux sounds too much like Billie Holiday for my taste, although she has a wonderfully unconventional repertoire. Still, after reading David Skinner's rave in the Weekly Standard, I'm going to give the album another spin.

If you want to hear a genuinely original voice, try Patricia Barber's live CD "A Fortnight in France", my favourite jazz album of 2004 and an edgier version of Diana Krall. I'd always found Barber's music a little precious before. This set floored me straight away.
