If you wanted a snap-shot of British public opinion, this morning's BBC Five Live phone-in on George W. Bush was pretty enlightening - and scary. Listen for yourself while the link is still up. It would be nice to think the callers weren't typical, but I've heard the same rabid opinions over and over since 9/11. There were a couple of ranting pro-Americans too, but they were a minority. My favourite Bush-basher was "Ibrahim" from Glasgow, who opened with the best disclaimer since the days of "Some of my best friends are black...":
In case any infantile, childish charge is made against me of being anti-American, it should be pointed out I'm all for Americans, particularly the Native Americans who were ethnically cleansed at the hands of white colonizers, to the tune of twelve million people...
