SHE LOVES ISRAEL

I suppose it's a sign of the times when the appearance of an article in praise of the Jewish state becomes an event in itself. Julie Burchill's Times essay may be over-the-top in places (what else would you expect from her?) but it's well worth seeking out:

"...[T]he puzzle comes back to this — why do these people, above all others, inspire such ludicrous, ceaseless, surreal loathing? Why is it that one of my sweetest, youngest, most educated friends said to me one night, not even drunk: “Come on babe, admit it — don’t you ever EVER think that if the Jews had never existed how much easier life would be?”

(Normal service is restored in the form of Ghada Karmi's riposte to Burchill, published in the same section. Interesting to note that Karmi still doesn't even appear to accept Israel's right to exist.)

UPDATE: Karmi would fit in well at this University of London conference.
