MY IDEA OF A PERFECT MUSICAL EVENING...

...is listening to a concert by the great singer-songwriter Caetano Veloso. Just about every Brazilian expat in London squeezed into the Barbican for last night's show at the Barbican. They weren't disappointed. Veloso is a rare figure in modern pop music: a performer who can talk about philosophy and history in between crooning Cole Porter or re-working a Nirvana song.
If you have yet to discover him, the place to start is his magnificent live tribute to the films of Fellini, Omaggio a Federico e Giulietta. No better album has come my way in the last twenty years. (The US version is the one to get, as the sleeve contains English translations.) I also recommend Fina Estampa Ao Vivo, a live collection of Latin American tunes, mainly sung in Spanish. If you want the equally gorgeous bossa nova ballads, the compilation A Bossa de Caetano is hard to beat.
