When I went to bed at 3am, it still looked as if Kerry had the edge. I even found myself thinking it might not be such a bad thing if the Democrats won, if it meant defusing the awful frustration that has been building up in them since 2000. So much animosity is bad for any democracy.
And now, this morning, I still feel a twinge of sympathy. But it vanishes whenever I ask myself one simple question: which party found room in its VIP section for Michael Moore? Time for the grown-ups to take charge again.
Quick impressions of the coverage. I kept flicking back to Brit Hume and the BBC's ultra-professional David Dimbleby. Apart from Jeff Greenfield. CNN was drab and dull. Fox wins again. Having doubted blogger Hugh Hewitt's optimism, I now take my hat off to him.
One question I'm eager to see answered: how did the black vote divide in the end? Shelby Steele pointed out to me earlier this year that the gay marriage question could have consequences in that regard. Was he right?
Hard to celebrate here, as only one of my friends leaned towards Bush. I'd better not intrude on their grief.
